Clans

The cats that live around the lake are sorted by clans ( groups of cats that live together because they share common characteristics). There are 4 main clans - Hailclan, Stormclan, and DeathClan. A clan cat should always be ready to help their own clan at all costs. Close friendships between cats in different clans are not recommended because the clans have a strong rivalry that has lasted many, many years.

The Clans:

HailClan - HailClan cats hunt a variety of prey: mice, squirrels, voles, and birds. The special characteristics of HailClan cats are having long claws that let them climb trees easier and are furious in battle. HailClan's territory is generally two forests divided by a river. For those that read Warriors, HailClan formed origonally from ShadowClan, with many a ThunderClan.

Stormclan - StormClan cats are well rounded in hunting. The special characteristics of Stormclan cats are the ability to swim well and strong legs for leaping. Stormclan's territory contains many creeks and woods. For those that read Warriors, it seems like Stormclan is part Riverclan and some Skyclan.

Deathclan - Deathclan is made of clan cats that betrayed their clans and loner cats. They love killing and causing pain. Though Deathclan is a clan, the bonds between Deathclan cats are less strong than those in the warrior clans.

There is a special clan called StarClan. StarClan is made up of every clan cat that was loyal to their clan their whole life. StarClan lives up in the sky among the stars, where peace is constant and prey is rich. Sometimes cats of StarClan go into the dreams of living cats to give prophecies or send a message.

The original clans in Erin Hunter's books are ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and WindClan. Each had special skills that were powerful. StormClan, HailClan, AshClan, and FernClan are the descendants of the ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and WindClan cats. There was a great battle between DeathClan and the modern four clans, and FernClan and AshClan died out. StormClan and HailClan have survived and stayed strong, and DeathClan suffered great losses.
